Statistical analysis and data processing
Deadline – urgently required, applications to be received as soon as possible within April and May 2009

Project/Activity
Statistical support to production of regional reports on:
- Environment and development, water, climate change
- Millennium Development Goals, social development, economic development (more than one contract position possible)

Location
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
Rajadamnern Nok Avenue,
Bangkok, Thailand

Contract periods
- 3 months to 12 months (full time and/or part time), with possibility of extension
- start dates – varying, end April, onwards

Duties and responsibilities
Data analysis
- Work with statistical assistants and others to assess data quality
- Assist in the undertaking of analytical and methodological studies
- Assess progress towards internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals
- Assess disparities in MDG / environmental achievements/situation between and within countries
- Assess the impact of MDG / environmental policies and interventions
- Compile aggregate MDG / environmental indicators for regions, subregions and groups of countries with special needs

Data processing
- Compile, process and manipulate data sets derived from a variety of sources
- Assemble and examine original statistical material to ensure accuracy, clarity and validity; contribute to assessment of data quality; make appropriate adjustments
- Update statistical series in established formats, maintain databases, apply new data and derived statistics, enter data on survey reports and provide information for publications
- Prepare charts, graphs and other outputs for reporting and presentation of various data
- Respond to requests for specific data, assist in liaising with UN organizations and project partners and others to obtain statistical and other relevant information
- Prepare data sets upon request, respond to queries/requests and maintain/update web pages
- Document data sources and processing.

Dependent on experience

Experience and Qualifications
At least three years of work experience of working with data,
- for data processing, to include advanced use of spreadsheets and databases (incl. SQL)
- for statistical analysis, to include two (2) years of intensive and varied analysis using Stata, SPSS, other applications
- Languages: English (written and spoken)
- Evidence of experience in one or more of the areas covered by the regional reports
- Academic qualifications - University education with coursework/training in statistical methods and procedures
